WDC IT Director, HPC and Cloud Computing Tools and Infrastructure
Western Digital's High Performance Computing and CloudComputing environments are key to bringing new storage solutions to market. AsDirector of High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud ComputingInfrastructure, you will be at the heart of Western Digital's engineering andproduct development process, delivering the HPC and Cloud Computinginfrastructure that empowers engineering teams to develop new storagetechnologies and deliver high quality products to market quickly. The sheer diversityof Western Digital's products (solid state solutions and hard disk drives forconsumer and data center markets, S3 compatible data center archival systemsand more) requires a variety of development applications and HPC computingsolutions be available to engineering teams worldwide. Western Digital'suse of Cloud Computing is a key capability for delivering HPC, Big Datacomputing and rapid scale deployments of optimized infrastructure solutionsworldwide.
This position will ensure Western Digital's success bypartnering with the worldwide engineering teams to deliver the right scalablesolutions and computing infrastructure for physics based modeling, CFD, CAE,FEA, and EDA applications. This large catalogue of engineering applicationsrepresents the many engineering and development disciplines here at WesternDigital. Our computing solutions are provided from a true hybridenterprise IT environment, scaling from on-premise clusters to large clustersin colocation data centers to hyperscale computing solutions (a.k.a theCloud). We manage computing both GPU and CPU based clusters andextend to thousands of processor cores to meet the many demands of ourengineering teams.
Utilizing Cloud Computing, Western Digital has uniqueopportunities for rapid, dynamically scalable computing infrastructure to meetneeds ranging from Big Data analytics to supporting the Western Digital MyCloudenvironment. Proper use of Cloud Computing allows teams to dramaticallychange and improve workflows while simultaneously decreasing IT TCO for WesternDigital.

Manage and lead the team to deploy and support theworld-class High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions (inclusive ofapplications as needed) for the diverse, worldwide team of Western Digitaldevelopment engineers as part of the Western Digital IT team, with a strongemphasis on Linux/Unix computing solutions. The HPC solutions aredeployed on-premise, in colocation centers and in the Cloud. The HPCsolutions include both CPU and GPU based computing solutions.
Manage and lead the team to deploy and support the worldclass Cloud Computing solutions for Western Digital worldwide, drivingcontinued OpX improvements and working with end users and development teams toopportunistically leverage the latest cloud capabilities.
Be the pointcontact for Cloud day to day operations related to security, networking,identify management to drive alignment with overall IT strategy.
Be the SME/Lead for UNIX/Linux operations worldwide.
Manage the engineering application deployment andapplication support for Western Digital's development teams worldwide.
Define the strategy for the next generation of HPC andCloud computing operations and applications infrastructures at Western Digital,focusing on stability, agility, security, IP protection, and compliance.
With engineering and procurement teams, lead commercialengineering simulation and development application licensing discussions. As a partner and service provider to the engineering teams, drive optimizedlicense utilization.
As part of IT, bring best of class enterprise scalablesolutions deployments that align to corporate best practices, economies ofscale, security and governance.
Be an advocate for Open Source HPC and Linux solutionsdeployment where appropriate and be knowledgeable of relevant Open Source HPCand engineering simulation solutions.
Lead by example in the technical areas and if needed beready to drill into technical issues to recommend the right direction
Establish and maintain a collaborative, team-basedcross-functional management approach that fosters engagement, consensus andcollaboration.
Work with the IT Leadership to support solution development,culture creation and operational efficiencies in alignment with long termplanning goals
Engage, coordinate and align with engineering anddevelopment teams' decision makers/leadership to develop a short-term andlong-term technology strategy to achieve corporate goals.
BS/BA preferred or equivalent experience
10 years of relevant industry experience, with at least5 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience in ITand/or development teams.
Experience with installation, management and use ofsoftware such as compilers, scientific applications, batch schedulers, jobresource, application license and utilization managers.
Experience with the installation, configuration,management, and use of high performance computers such as clusters of Linuxboxes, large SMPs and large scale solutions of 1000's of computing cores.
3 years of direct experience with Amazon Web Servicesand/or Microsoft Azure environments.
10 years of relevant experience in enterprise levelLinux/UNIX systems administration provisioning, configuration, troubleshooting,and monitoring (Nagios, Zenoss, SNMP, Ancible)
Excellent understanding of current methodologies in highperformance operations and large-scale implementations.
Must possess strong documentation skills and can workwith rapid change and fast pace.
Proven ability to influence and/or lead high performing/geographically dispersed teams.
Excellent analytical, problem solving, andtroubleshooting skills to manage complex process and technology issues.
